Yesterday afternoon members of the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue regional Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) team were tasked by the Pacific Rim National Parks Visitor Safety Team to assist with the rescue of an injured hiker on the West Coast Trail.

The hiker had fallen approximately 20 feet landing on a steep section of jagged rocks. The AVRS/ASAR CDFL team staged at Gateway Marina and responded to an area known as Thrasher Hill. A team of two CDFL techs were inserted via fixed line where they were met by Parks Canada Visitor Safety Technicians who had already accessed the subject and rendered first aid. The hiker had sustained moderate injuries and was unable to continue on the trail. The CDFL team flew the hiker back to the staging area where they were met by BC Ambulance and subsequently transported to the nearest hospital.
